Facilitating the development and sharing of SOPs for water and wastewater systems.
Standard
operating procedures (SOPs) provide consistency and continuity to utility
operations and yet can be overwhelming to develop and maintain. While there is
no shortage of guidance materials available to utilities to develop an SOP,
until recently there wasn’t a formal structure in place for utilities to share
existing SOPs.
The Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) Cooperative was formed in 2013 to provide the opportunity and
structure for water and wastewater utilities to share SOPs. The Cooperative
facilitates:
- Sharing of SOP
formats – The
Cooperative provides utilities an opportunity to compare and contrast SOP
formats. This includes innovative formats like use of photos and video.
- Sharing of
SOPs for common tasks – The
Cooperative has a growing library of over 200 SOPs collected from member
utilities. Members can access this library to develop new or improve upon
existing SOPs.
- Development of
training curriculum and/or other tools – Members and non-members can access training and other tools
to support the use of SOPs. To date this includes development of core SOPs in
distribution, collections, preliminary wastewater treatment and water treatment.
